Pastor's Sunday Class

Pastor's Sunday Class

June & July | 9:45 am | Room 200

Join your pastors and their guests to explore the “Theologians Through Time" highlighted in our Sunday sermons. Come to learn and to ponder the historical significance of these folks and what they have to teach the church today.

WEEK 1

“Has it never happened to you to lose yourself for a moment in a swift and satisfying experience for which you found no name?” (from Practical Mysticism by Evelyn Underhill).

Rationalism is not the only path to reality ' in fact, according to Evelyn Underhill, it may even be an impediment. Born in England and educated at King's College for Women in London, Underhill wrote several novels and books of light verse, but has found lasting fame through her writings on Christian mysticism.

Join Pastor Emily Wright and scholar Peggy Pevetaux as we kick off the first week of our summer sermon series and pastor’s class, ‘Voices in the Wilderness.

WEEK 2

In week two of our summer series, Voices in the Wilderness, Pastor Emily introduces us to Roger Nishioka, scholar, pastor, advocate and thought leader for intergenerational congregational connection. The class opens with a sampling of Roger’s dynamic preaching before considering six new ways that the church can be more inclusive and welcoming to every generation of believer.

WEEK 3

St Francis deep commitment to living a life with Christ made a profound impact upon the Church and still calls us to more joyful and giving lives.

WEEK 5

In this installment of the Voices From the Wilderness pastors' class, Pastor Kevin delves into the profound teachings of Gregory of Nyssa on eternal life. Discover how the ancient wisdom of our revered Church Fathers (and Mothers) can illuminate our modern spiritual journey as we explore Gregory and his sister Macrina’s insights on the soul’s endless pursuit of divine love and the transformative power of faith. [Note: the previous week's class, week 4, unfortunately was not recorded]

WEEK 6

Pastor Emily talks through why the desert fathers and mothers  went to the desert, and what their daily life was like there.

WEEK 7

In week 7 of the Voices From the Wilderness Pastors’ Class, Pastor Chris Knepp provides an informative ‘deep dive’ into the backstory of William Seymour and the history of Pentecostalism, as a supplement to Pastor Stephen Finkel’s July 14th sermon on Seymour.

WEEK 8

In this special Sunday School class, Seminary Intern Rachel Finken introduces us to the profound teachings of Gustavo Gutiérrez, a pioneer in Liberation Theology.

Join us as Rachel explores Gutiérrez's transformative ideas on social justice, faith, and the preferential option for the poor. Discover how his work challenges us to live out our faith in action, advocating for the marginalized and oppressed.
